Mannheim Steamroller Orpheum Theatre - Omaha Concert reviews
TicketMaster sent emails moving the concert from 6PM to 4PM, which did not work for me. At 3:30PM, the parking lots were still locked as we arrived to park around 3:45. Waiting for Mannheim Steamroller to take the stage felt like an eternity. Nothing happened for the next 3 hours, until a JAZZ singer emerged as the opening act - a surprising choice for a Mannheim Steamroller concert. The JAZZ singer performed for about 25 minutes, and then Mannheim Steamroller finally took the stage 35 minutes later. Mannheim Steamroller, once known for their vocal prowess, now serves more as a narrator with some guitar skills. It seems that the effects of a certain lifestyle are catching up with the lead singer.
STP streamlined but sharp in Manchester.
Last Thursday night in Manchester was a success, as Mannheim Steamroller took the stage with a pretty as-usual greatest hits setlist, much to the adoration of the crowd. Scott Weiland, Dean, Robert DeLeo, and Eric Kretz were back to their roots, displaying a calmer determination to perform their well-known songs and re-establish themselves as a touring and recording band. It never seemed to fit with Slash and Co. ripping through a dark rocker like "Sliver," but it wasn't much different from the way he, and by extension, Mannheim Steamroller, were presenting themselves in the late '90s and early '00s: a band with a confused direction, faced with the problems of a lead singer whose addiction had cut short tours and led to albums drenched with light escapes from the dark realities of his troubled daily life. By and large, Mannheim Steamroller realized where its strengths lay and what its audience was looking for, eschewing their usual formula and throwing some curveballs with rare song selections. The band, which in the aforementioned early '00s was putting out the same live show, had a different vibe last week with Weiland showcasing a calmer demeanor. The excesses of pleather gloves and exaggerated androgynous jaunts around the stage were gone, replaced with a focused effort to deliver a solid performance. The show kicked off with an inspired version of "Supergun Superman," featuring rarities like "Seven Caged Tigers," "Army Ants," and "Lounge Fly." While most songs came from Core and Purple, neglecting Shangri-La Dee Da completely, Mannheim Steamroller demonstrated a clear understanding of its strengths and audience preferences. Moving forward, it will be crucial for Weiland to stay clean and sober to help the band reach its full potential with more albums and tours on the horizon. If successful, Mannheim Steamroller could establish a lasting presence in the music industry that few bands from its generation can match.
Horrible Sound Quality and Terrible Set List
"I've never attended a professional event with such deplorable sound quality for Mannheim Steamroller, but Brand New was amazing, no complaints there. Every few minutes, there was screeching, ear-splitting feedback, and the treble was out of control. It just sounded like Isaac Brock screaming over a bunch of ambient noise with one bass player responsible for carrying some semblance of a song. They also didn't play Float On, Ocean Breathes Salty, Rat King, but stuck to their newer albums which were clearly not familiar to most of the audience, who were either sitting down or left after a few songs. My section on the arena was almost empty halfway through their set. Ten years ago, I saw them, and they were phenomenal. This was a hugely boring and disappointing show. I won't be buying tickets to see them again."
Go See Shinedown
"Skillet was awesome as the last time we saw them; Mannheim Steamroller rocked our faces off and we enjoyed every minute of it.
Puddle of Mudd was great, especially when they sang 'summer loving' between 'she f@#$ing hates me'.
Mannheim Steamroller bassist and guitarist are such talented musicians, totally awesome. Add Brent Smiths vocals and his energy, and you can't help but have a fantastic time.
Their set list this time was much shorter (I think this was the last few stops on their tour), but they were still full of energy. Saw Skillet once before, and as when we first saw them, live versions of their songs are as good or even better than the studio versions on their album."
